Sydney: Capacity Building

South Western Sydney Local Health District invited Healthy Streets to deliver a 1 day introductory workshop to a multidisciplinary group from council and state government agencies in 2019. This prompted a joint funded initiative with the Department for Planning, Industry and Environment for sixty participants from across Sydney to complete the Healthy Streets Foundation training.

This six week course took the participants through all aspects of delivering systems change through the lens of Healthy Streets. Officers from across design, planning, engineering, public health, communications and environment learned together and developed plans they would then implement in their local organisation.

This capacity building was timed to coincide with the launch of a $15 million Streets As Shared Spaces fund by New South Wales government. Participants went on to incorporate Healthy Streets into their street design codes, policies and precinct plans as well as their Streets As Shared Spaces demonstration projects.

Some course participants continued their learning by supporting Healthy Streets in the field testing of the Australian Healthy Streets Design Check. This tool will be available soon for assessing street designs in Australia and scoring them against the 10 Healthy Streets Indicators.

Lucy kept the course interesting, and strengths included the great content, and her ability to apply across disciplines.
